Framework

The Past, the Presence, and the Future

Our work within iCamp strives towards a modern interoperability framework for technology-enhanced learning. In order to be able to look forward, we first have looked at the past to sum up the current state of the art and identify their shortcomings.

To sharpen our mind, we have reviewed conceptual work form requirements engineering and software architecture design and deployed these instruments for requirements gathering, elicitation, and modelling in our field, the field of technology-enhanced learning (TEL). The section ‘methodology‘ summarizes (almost in the style of a glossary) the conceptual vocabulary we have extracted and through which we have reviewed existing work. Of primary interest to us were the concepts of layering, viewpoints, quality attributes, and pattern-based design.

Subsequently, we provide an extensive review of eleven existing architectures and frameworks in TEL (’state of the field‘). Based on the categories established, we offer a structured comparison of the initiatives under consideration and draw conclusions for our own design process.

Third, we describe the possible spectrum of perspectives on system integration in general and in technology-enhanced learning in particular (’theoretical approaches‘). We introduce three levels of integration relevant to iCamp, i.e. integration at the level of information integration and dissemination, integration at the application and integration at the presentational level. For each of these levels, we discuss selected literature threads and evaluate their importance to our efforts.
